“Kasimir Walchner and the oldest Radolfzell town history from 1825”
Lecture by Christof Stadler, historian and principal
In Radolfzell, a street on the edge of the old town commemorates Kasimir Walchner, a remarkable personality at the beginning of the 19th century. He began his service in the prince-bishop’s chancellery in Meersburg, later moved to Bohlingen and with the secularization he entered the service of the Grand Duchy of Baden. In 1811 he became head of the newly founded Radolfzell district office. The Oberamtmann remained in the town for 13 years and described the prevailing hardship and poverty in what was then the lake district. He was also interested in history and after his retirement he moved to Freiburg, publishing a history of Pfullendorf in 1824 and of Radolfzell in 1825. On over 300 pages, he compiled a history of the town based on the study of sources, which was reprinted in 1983. On the 200th anniversary of his town history, it is worth taking a look at his biography and chronicle, many aspects of which are still valid.
