Enough with the fun! – Radolfzell carnival under National Socialism
Lecture by Michael Fuchs
The National Socialist regime quickly ensured that all democratic, social and state organizations and structures were disempowered and destroyed or integrated through the Gleichschaltung process. This process did not stop at the Radolfzell carnival. Leading carnival figures were dismissed and replaced by functionaries loyal to the regime.
However, this did not bring the carnival to a standstill: on Schmutzige Dunschtig 1933, at the end of the first “Fasnet-Revue”, a newly founded 33-strong fool’s guard surprised the public.
Four years later, a single figure in the costume of a jester appeared on the Radolfzell market square. Inspired by a poem by the Radolfzell priest Hermann Sernatinger, which was published in the “Freie Stimme” as early as 1913, Fritz Kenzler presented the Kappedeschle for the first time at the town ball, which was immediately well received by the Radolfzell jesters.
Such politically innocuous carnival performances were still feasible. However, there were also unpopular carnival events that led to outrage among those loyal to the cause and to the arrest of Radolfzell jesters.
