East German democrats in the early post-war period – Exhibition
21. May – 22. June
Courageous freedom fighters
30 courageous women and men who resisted the new communist dictatorship in East Germany after 1945 and campaigned for a new democratic beginning are the subject of the exhibition “… those who were denied participation – East German democrats in the early post-war period”, which will be on display from Tuesday, May 21, 2024, until Saturday, June 22, 2024, in the Radolfzell City Library on the second basement floor. Many of the often forgotten people whose life stories the visitors learn about paid a high price for their courageous commitment: with their lives, long prison sentences or expulsion.
The exhibition was initiated by the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Basic Law on May 23, 1949. In addition, it commemorates the founding of the GDR on October 7, 1949 and is thus also a contribution to the 35th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution, with which the East Germans fought for these rights, overcame the communist dictatorship and paved the way for German unity.
